New Ducks on our Pond
In the last edition, there was a report on the duck project for the pond at the Jardin d'Aubers. Unfortunately, due to the extreme weather conditions this winter, the ducks did not survive and a fox is thought to have crossed the frozen pond to enter the duckhouse. Plans are in place for a further two ducks to be installed in the late Spring.
Community Bus Service
The Parish Council has agreed to continue to support the community bus service for the next financial year. The scheme was set up in January 2008 following the withdrawal of the Post Bus and provides a bus service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between Wadhurst and Crowborough via Mayfield. The service is a joint venture between East Sussex County Council, Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish Council and Wadhurst Parish Council. A timetable of the community bus service is displayed on the Parish Council noticeboard and is available at wadhurst.info. Anyone wishing to use the service should telephone CTLA 01273 517332 to register.
Telephone Kiosk
The red telephone kiosk, part of our rural environment and loved by many, is under threat from BT in a programme to rationalise the number of public payphones, due to rising costs and poor usage as people rely on mobile phones.

The red telephone kiosk at Durgates has historical value as one of the K6 kiosks designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott as part of King George V's Jubilee celebrations. This kiosk was scheduled for removal by BT; however, under a scheme available to local authorities, Wadhurst Parish Council adopted the telephone box on 17th February. The telephone equipment has been removed but the traditional red box will now remain as an important visual feature in the village.

The Village Appearance

Following the success of the increased floral displays in the High Street, a further three hanging baskets are due to be installed for the summer planting. Whilst it is difficult to imagine hot summer weather at the moment, you will be pleased to know that 'grey water' is used to maintain the hanging baskets.
Following a review of grass cutting, the parish council has reappointed Ashdown Garden Services to cut the grass at the Jardin d'Aubers, The Walk and some other areas. A few years ago, the Council undertook to cut the grass at the station exit to improve safety at this difficult junction and this maintenance will continue. Highway verges are the responsibility of East Sussex County Council and they will undertake this grass cutting - a huge financial saving to the Parish Council.

Affordable Homes
The 17 new affordable homes being built off Courthope Avenue should be ready for occupation in the Summer - the development is called Styles Lane.

Anyone interested in one of the properties must be registered with Wealden District Council on the Housing Register and have completed a Local Connection Form. As the homes are outside of any normal permitted development, preference will be given to those with a proven connection with the village.
Wealden District Council operates a Choice Based Lettings system. This means that people who would like one of the new homes need to bid for a property - this can be done by:
coupon
telephone
text
online
The Parish Council will work with Wealden District Council to try and ensure that people are given as much notice as possible before the bidding starts.
If you have any questions about the Housing Register, Local Connection Form or the bidding process, please telephone the Housing Department at Wealden District Council 01323 443322
