THE NEW WADHURST RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Following the launch of the New Wadhurst Residents Association in July 2007, we are pleased to announce that progress has been made by our residents association on some of the issues which were of concern to local residents.

Pathways - Courthope Avenue & Snape View, and pt Washwell Lane: Concerns that the pathways were becoming dangerous were reported to the Highways Dept. of ESCC. Repairs have now been carried out including relaying nearly all footpaths and installation of drop kerbs making access easier. Thank you ESCC for acting so promptly.

Royal Mail Post Bus The Post Bus was being discontinued at the end of the year due to cut backs. We approached Don Benn, Transport Procurement, ESCC who looked into alternatives and how to obtain funding for a replacement community bus. We are pleased to say these negotiations are going well and with Mayfield and Wadhurst Parishes sharing the cost with ESCC we hope this service will start in the New Year. At the moment it will run from Wadhurst – Mayfield and then on to Crowborough twice a day, three days per week. Final details to be agreed.

WADHURST PROBUS CLUB
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 6 November at 10.00am in the Wadhurst Social Club with a talk by Brigadier Frank Steer on The Night The Berlin Wall Came Down.

WADHURST ROTARY CLUB CHRISTMAS LIGHTS EVENT
Following last years highly acclaimed evening, the Rotary Club are again organising a Christmas Lights and late night shopping evening on the High Street in Wadhurst. The event will take place on Friday 14 December from 5.30pm.

It is hoped that nearly all the shops and businesses will be lighting up their windows and taking part. Rotary Club will be purchasing more Festive lighting, and events planned include, a Santa’s Grotto and other children’s entertainment, a Hog Roast, Carol Singing, an appearance by Wadhurst Brass Band and lots of food and drink. It is also intended to hold a mini Christmas Craft Fair with stalls selling all sorts of Christmas goodies.

Last years event raised enough money to purchase a Defibrillator for the village, which is now in use. As it is intended to make this an annual occasion, and in order to try and brighten up even more our village High Street, Rotary Club have decided to put all the money raised from this year’s event back into the Community by putting the money towards providing bigger and better lights for the future.
Further information on the event will be appearing around the village over the next two months.

Our own Christmas Fair, full of wonderful and unique stalls for all your Christmas shopping - food, toys, jewellery, gifts for home and garden, silk scarves, fashion items, etc. Come and have refreshments and cake in the morning, yummy lunch and afternoon tea.

Hospice in the Weald - Wadhurst Link
A rather belated 'thank you' to Eileen Hemsley who held a coffee morning at her home at the beginning of September when her garden was looking absolutely beautiful. The weather was not too kind to us, but the wonderful sum of just over £100 was raised on the morning, together with further monies from the sale of Eileen's hand made cards. May I say a special thank you to all those people who have held a coffee morning this year for Hospice. If anyone would like to hold a coffee morning or an afternoon tea to raise funds for this marvellous cause, please let either Val Tunbridge or myself know - we are both very willing to help and I do have "the" cups and saucers.

Also if anyone would like to join the Wadhurst Link I would be very grateful to hear from you - nothing too onerous, but sharing of ideas and a little moral support would be very welcome!

WADHURST HISTORY SOCIETY
Starting the 2007/08 season, the Society held a highly successful Quiz Night ‘1253 and All That’ on Sept 29 in the Commem; twelve tables battled for victory over eight rounds and two table quizzes – and a ploughman’s supper. The winners – with a total score of 85.5% were The Rosebuds, closely followed by 1066 and All That with 82.3% and The Ironmasters with 81.9%. On 11 October Peter Griffiths from Brogdale took a comfortably full Commem through the History of the Apple with plenty of examples of apple types and examples of other fruits in the collection at Faversham; also available were cider from Michael Kent and freshly pressed apple juice from the Turners.

On 8 November Hugh Miller will take us through the World War I story of ‘Four Brothers and a Friend called Dan’ – a moving story to set the atmosphere for the run up to Remembrance Day. Doors open at 7.30pm and the talk starts at 8.00pm – visitors most welcome.

WADHURST ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
The November meeting of the Society – in the Methodist Upper Room at 7:30pm on Wednesday 21 November – trials a new concept: the video lecture. We will be watching a couple of talks - 'The Intrinsic Brightness of Stars' and 'The Structure of the Milky Way' – with a coffee break in between. Visitors most welcome.

Mayfield and District U3A
Our November meeting will take place at the Mayfield Memorial Hall at 2.00pm on Thursday the 15th; Ian Funnell will be our speaker. Ian is our Area Representative and Member of the NEC. However he will not be speaking about his role in the U3A, instead, his subject will be “Energy for the Future”, a topic which has interest and importance for us all. As always the talk is free to members and £1 per head for visitors.

New groups are always being formed within our U3A, the latest being “Singing for Fun”. Why not come along to one of our general meetings and find out about us?

Afternoon Fellowship
Our next meeting will be at 2.30pm on Thursday 22 November at St George’s Hall with a talk by  Sister Fiona entitled, ‘Sister’s eye view’. If you have never ventured into Afternoon Fellowship, it would be lovely to see you: all-comers welcome.

CALLING ALL BRIDGE PLAYERS!
The local Action Medical Research fund raising team is running a bridge afternoon in the Commemoration Hall on Tuesday 6 November starting at 2.00pm. Please make up a table of four - Entrance fee £7 per player (£28 per table) to play Chicago style bridge staying with your own team all afternoon. Please bring a bridge table and cloth, we will supply cards, score sheets and rules. We will also provide a delicious tea and there will be a raffle. For many years this group has raised funds for vital research into unglamorous but very debilitating medical conditions. Do get together with your bridge friends and support us. MINI MARKET
will be held in the Methodist Church on Saturday 3 November from 9.30 to 11.00am. There will be an extensive Traidcraft Stall - an opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping.

JUST DESSERTS and just a little bit more!
‘Normally I never eat puddings but I would love just a little bit more.’ Sounds familiar?

On Saturday 17 November at 7.30pm in the Commemoration Hall, Women of Wadhurst are holding a ‘PUDDING EVENING’, when they will be tempting everyone with their usual variety of wonderful home cooked desserts. Fraser Williamson, a local wine importer, will be talking about dessert wines and will suggest which wine is best for different types of puddings. Pianist Iain Rae will be playing a wide selection of classical music, jazz standards and songs from musicals and films. Tickets at £10 will include three vouchers to sample three wines. Many more wines will be available on the night. Proceeds will be in aid of Mullins Memorial Fund – a local charity which supports people in the community of Wadhurst. WADHURST DRAMATIC CLUB
Coffee Morning gatherings, where both Club Members and prospective joiners are very welcome indeed to come along and have an informal chat about the Club over a cup of coffee (or tea), are now a regular feature in the Club's monthly activities calendar. They are held at Carillon Cottage, High Street, Wadhurst, usually on the first Saturday of each month (10.30am to 12 noon). The next gathering will be on Saturday 3 November. Do try and come - it's bound to be fun!!
