WADHURST’S 60/90 CELEBRATIONS : WED. 6 – SUN. 10 JULY

commemorate the end of the Second World War and the 90th anniversary
of the Battle of Aubers Ridge on Sunday 9 May 1915.

• Celebration with Flowers in the Parish Church, a flower festival which is being created by the ladies of the Church Flowers team and their friends. Wednesday and Thursday from 10am till 7.30 pm. Friday 10am till 5 pm. Donations for entry.

• Exhibition of Second World War memorabilia and artefacts, prepared by Stan Cosham, Commemoration Hall. Wednesday – Friday : 10.00am till 5.00pm. Saturday: 10.00am till noon. Come and remember or find out about what was being used during those war years and be surprised at what we still use today. Donations for entry.

• Aviation in northern France during the Second World War, Wednesday 7.30 for 8.00pm, Commemoration Hall. An illustrated talk given in English by Joss Leclercq from Aubers. Joss is a world expert on his subject, and is one of the original inspirations for the Twinning. Organised by Wadhurst History Society. £2 at the door for non-members. Licensed bar.

• Workers’ Playtime Music Hall Commemoration Hall Thursday and Friday, at 7.30 for 8.00pm devised and directed by Dot Smytherman and Heather Woodward. this unique production includes in the cast, entertainers from Wadhurst, Frant, Stonegate, Tidebrook, Etchingham, Burwash and most of the stations in between. There will be plenty of opportunities for audience participation and flag-waving. Workers’ Playtime takes place in a canteen and, therefore, following war economy standard, there are no reserved seats. Doors open at 7.30pm and there will be a licensed bar. Fortunately current fashions seem to include flowery dresses but some costumes/uniforms might be available for hire from the Wadhurst Dramatic Club (Dot 783208). In the spirit of the War, please bring your own sandwiches (Spam, snook, fish paste, sandwich spread?). For the sake of other members of the audience, ladies are asked not to wear very large hats. Gas masks/respirators may be hung on the backs of the seats or stowed under the tables. Tickets (3 guineas = £3.15) from Newingtons.

• Five Guinea Hop at the Commemoration Hall and forecourt. Saturday from 7.30pm. Just listen or come and dance to Big Band Sounds with the 17-piece Glenn Miller-style band. Brush up your dancing skills. Licensed Bar. Tickets (five guineas = £5.25) at Newingtons include a bangers and mash supper.

• Sunday 10 July: 10.15am Ceremony of Remembrance at the War Memorial; 11.00am: Service in the Parish Church. Both attended by members of the British Legion and, we hope, friends from Aubers.

• Wadhurst Children’s Picnic Party at the Recreation Ground, Southview Road, Sunday afternoon from 3.00pm. Tickets are free from Newingtons. This party is for children under 11 and they must be accompanied by an adult. Food, refreshments, teas and coffees will be provided. Rain, hail or shine, come and find out what games and sports children played during the war, races and other surprises. Numbers are limited so, if by any chance someone finds they cannot come after all, please return your tickets as a waiting list system will apply.

• Wadhurst Brass Band, Commemoration Hall, Sunday evening, 8.00pm. The ‘Red, White and Blue’ concert will be a fitting finale for the celebrations with plenty of audience participation. Tickets (£3) from Newingtons or at the door.
